Summer Style - It's Back To Work, My Friends

Remember when summer felt like an eternity? When summer was that 3 month wonderland that meant playing outside, sleepovers, pool parties and the bottomless supply of ice cream? When "summer" was synonymous with "freedom"? Man, those were the days. And while we're fortunate enough to enjoy a week's vacation here and there, it's always back to work in the end. Sigh.

Having said that, I would now like to point out that it's Friday afternoon. We're busting out of the office and diving head first into the weekend! See you guys and gals next week.

jen boaz jewelry - An Ecological Touch

It’s time to round up those items that are far too special to be tucked away in a jewelry box at the back of your closet!
Unique, sentimental and full of individuality, Jen Boaz’s “Brilliant” necklaces give new life to the brooches, charms, watches, rings, bracelets, and earrings you love, but no longer wear.

Jen started this jewelry adventure after finishing her studies at the Studio Art at the University of Alabama. Mixing and matching old and new pieces of everything (from belts to old pieces of jewelry and clothing) Jen discovered her true passion – designing jewelry.

Wearing her creations consequently becomes a pleasure. Which one of her signature jewelry would you wear (doesn’t this lucky charms look stunning? There’s even an explanation for every item within!)

Rike Feurstein

You can often divide people into two distinct groups - "hat people" and "non hat people". Wearing a hat takes confidence, courage and a unique personal style. Whether the hat is worn for comfort or a statement or both, the choice of hat says a lot about the person. Rike Feurstein (a self-confessed hat-aholic) has done a lot for the hat industry with her clean, minimalistic, sculptural shaped designs. Her unique perspective breathes new life into classic shapes with the choice of irreverent fabrics or colours. She references iconic shapes from the 40's and 60's and reworks the look by injecting her own twist. Rike studied in New York and London before opening her own studio and showroom in Berlin and has an international stockist's resume including Barney's, Saks, Harvey Nichols, Tsum and Le Bon Marche. — Kate Vandermeer

Prada - Leading The Way In True Fashion Innovation

Mark our words: skinny legs are on their way out. Hard to believe, we know, given that every hipster from Hobart to Helsinki is sporting licorice legs right now but the tide is slowly turning, thanks to the world's top designers who have decided that they've had enough of the look. Enter Prada, who are still setting global trends and leading the way in true fashion innovation, despite being a global mega brand (which usually spells one thing: boring). The brilliant fashion house is on a mission to bring back seriously voluminous "flares," but with a fabulous signature quirky Prada twist in the form of lavish fabrication and intricate prints. Not for the faint-fashion hearted.

Still with Prada, parts of their beautiful new shoe collection look as if they have slipped straight out of a Salvador Dali painting or some other strange alternative universe where there are no design rules. We love the decorative heels, which look more like pieces of grand, hand-carved furniture than a pair of pumps. They're almost too good to wear. By Lisa Evans

maxine orange By Maxine Orange

maxine orange By Maxine Orange
I have always been interested in the arts and have continually loved to make stuff to sell since I was a young girl. Each and every bag that I make is one-of-a-kind. I have been working on my line for about 4 years now. I paint large paintings on canvas (approx. 4' x 4') and then the actual paintings are cut and sewn to make the bags. I have also started to feature the work of other emerging artists whose work I love. I'm now at a point where I will be using prints of the paintings in addition to the hand painted canvas, so I can expand my production.

The main ingredient of maxine orange handbags is hand-painted canvas. This is the one thing that makes them most special since each piece is cut from an original painting on canvas, hand painted by myself or one of my featured artists. Most of the bags from my original collection are composed completely of the painted canvas, and lined in satin. The more recent collections have taken a step up in quality using materials such as Italian leather and custom hardware. The target customer is a woman who loves art and likes to stand out from the crowd. My line is very different from others in the way that we have to have a number of paintings completed to fill a run of production. This may take a while to get all the paintings ready to have enough to fulfill the yield for each bag style that I want to produce. In turn we may only produce one or two bag styles rather than a whole collection each season. This is one reason that we may be moving towards using prints in addition to the hand-painted canvas

In my last year of college at The University of Alabama, I took my first sewing class. Full of inspiration, I found a painting that a friend in my painting class had that was off the stretchers and rolled up. He was preparing for his art show and this painting did not make the cut. I loved the painting, full of bright colors with patterns and designs filling the canvas. I asked him if I could cut up his painting so I could make a skirt - I would wear it to his show! He thought it sounded cool, so I began cutting right there on the floor of the painting studio, and there was a strip that I cut off the bottom that I folded up, and in my hands there it was... a bag to go with the skirt! Well, needless to say I went straight home and started sewing the bag with scrap pieces of denim and a satin lining with chunky contrast hand stitching and bead embellishments. I never made the skirt, but the bag was a big hit with all of my friends. I made a few more bags completely by hand before I learned more about the fashion industry and that I would have to have my bags produced professionally if I would really want to make this work.

One thing that is a bit of a nightmare for me is that many people who buy bags from me are afraid to use them since they are actual art pieces - they "don't want to mess them up" per se... HOWEVER, these bags are meant to be used and actually build character with age. I specifically prefer the way they look once they are worn in.

Well, I suppose one thing that always makes me happy is the fact that when I was asked "what do you want to be when you grow up?" my answer as a little girl was usually that I wanted to be an artist, and I do now have a multi-faceted career as an artist. Another thing that I love is that I have also provided a platform for other emerging artists to get their art out there into the real world.

Izzy Maternity just opened it’s second location in Buckhead, in the Peachtree Battle Promenade this month.
They are hosting a grand opening party on Tuesday, April 29 at 6:30 p.m. The party is sponsored by Atlanta Magazine. It will feature a summer fashion show, raffle prizes, DJ and food catered by Uncle Julio’s Casa Grande. In addition, all the money raised by the raffle will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Izzy Maternity also has a location in Alpharetta, in North Point Village.

About Izzy Maternity:
Fashion has been a life-long love for Israel Vahaba, the founder and manager of Izzy Maternity. Born and raised in Israel, he loved to help his mother, a dressmaker, design and make clothing. After marrying, Vahaba moved to Atlanta, Ga. in the 1970s.
While working at a men's clothing store, Vahaba recognized a major need in this market for quality maternity clothing and supreme customer service for expecting mothers. He has been in the maternity clothing business for over 20 years with stores at Perimeter and Gwinnett Place Malls before moving to North Point Mall, a location more convenient to many of his customers.

Maternity clothing styles and lines have come and gone during Vahaba's years in the business, but his attention to his customers and love for quality fashion has remained constant. Because he knows what works and what doesn't, Vahaba often works very closely with maternity clothes designers, keeping him--and his customers--ahead of last year's trends.
