Handmade jewelry - what do we think?

Handmade jewelry - what do we think?

The battle between nature vs. nurture has been raging since the dawn of time. On one hand we think that things are innately programmed, while on the other we think things are learned through experiences. Robert Cialdini, PhD - a renowned social psychologist and professor at Arizona State University - takes a look at some of these issues and talks about things like why we will not buy handmade jewelry that is cheap.

Throughout our days, we acquire stereotypes and tools that we use to judge our world efficiently. Without these, we would think too much and never get anything done. With that in mind, something like handmade jewelry carries with it the expectation that it will be expensive - jewelry is, after all, supposed to be rare and exotic.

So, Dr. Cialdini found that this is truly the fact. People would not buy handmade jewelry or jewelry of any kind if it was cheap - associating the low cost with poor quality. But, if the price were increased, even to ridiculously false inflations, people would assume it was exotic and rare and flock to buy it.
